CHAPTER FIFTEEN

BY THE TIME ROXIE TURNED down the street leading to the old Victorian manor that was her destination, she felt like she’d been driving forever. Around nine hours had elapsed since her explosive departure from The Flamingo Lodge. Once upon a time, she’d been a tireless road hog, driving back and forth across the country over and over, touring all the big cities and exploring many of its remotest rural corners.

Her life as a nomadic killer had seemed like it would go on forever, and she’d never once gotten tired of the endless adventure. She’d loved it, had lived for it, all without ever imagining she’d one day take an extended break. Then came her period of semi-exile on the island owned by the Order of the Dragon. She’d been moved there during a period of extreme heat from law enforcement, one so hot it strained even that powerful organization’s prodigious ability to shield her from repercussions.

At the time, a break had seemed like a good idea. She’d lived so long feeling like she was always racing headlong toward her doom, and it’d been nice to step away from that. On the island, she got her share of sex and violence, but it was in a controlled setting, with no more wild careening about and tempting fate.

Now she was remembering what it was truly like to drive and drive endlessly with no one but herself for company. She still liked driving and seeing all the different places, but it wasn’t quite the same as it’d been before. After Rob, she’d had to disappear for several months. A life of nomadic killing wasn’t suitable for a woman in her condition at the time, so she stayed in one secret location until her condition was no longer a factor. Until it resolved itself.

Then she was back on the road, reengaging with the mayhem like she’d never been away, perhaps because she’d been through so much emotional tumult and was assailed by so many regrets about what she’d done to Rob. She’d tried extra hard to become who she’d been before him again, and for a while it worked, especially during the initial phase of her service to the Order.

But even back then, it hadn’t felt right to some part of her. She didn’t like being just a cog in a larger machine. Becoming a lone wolf again also didn’t feel quite right. She’d had a number of temporary traveling companions over the years. Some had stayed with her for months, others for only weeks or days. She’d had fun times with some of them, but not one of them ever came close to filling the space in her soul she’d created by killing Rob.

She missed having him at her side.

All these endless hours on the road the last couple days would’ve been so much more tolerable with him. She’d spent much of that time fantasizing about him being there in the shotgun seat next to her. The image of him kicked
